Key Data

In a small crew, with personal support from our instructors, you’ll dive into the material and build your skills step by step. Even with the focus on training, there’s plenty of time to have fun together and enjoy the crew atmosphere.

We’ll cover approximately 150 nautical miles during the course. On most days, we’ll spend 6 to 8 hours on the water.

Requirements:

  • You’ll need at least the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or an equivalent qualification such as German Sportküstenschifferschein (SKS), Austria’s FB2, Switzerland’s Hochseeausweis
  • You can apply once you’ve sailed at least 1,500 nautical miles on seagoing sailing yachts, (approximately five to eight weeks of sailing).
  • You have either skippered a sailing trip yourself or have experience manoeuvring a yacht over 38ft.
  • You’ve successfully applied to become a JTC skipper, and our team has invited you to join the Skipper Academy.
  • You can swim unaided for at least 20 minutes.
  • You’re ready to take an active part in everyday life on board. Alongside the sailing training, that includes preparing meals, tidying up and washing dishes.

Your Crew

  • We sail as a flotilla of 1 to 4 yachts, with 8 to 10 participants on each yacht.
  • Most of the crew members come from across Europe.
  • Around 80% of participants are young professionals aged 27 to 33.
  • Our JTC skippers are specially trained through the Skipper Academy.

A Balanced Crew

  • We aim for an even gender mix when the trip is fully booked at least two weeks before departure..
  • We’ll thoughtfully match you with the crew that suits you best. You can tell us about any preferences in the booking form.

Crew Chat

You’ll get access to your crew chat right after booking. Say “Hey Crew 😍🤙” and start planning your journey together!

  • All yachts are booked exclusively for our crews in advance.
  • We’ll confirm your exact yacht model after the crews have been assigned, around two weeks before the trip starts.
  • All academy trips take place on monohulls.

Getting ready and meeting the crew

All participants and instructors meet at 11:00 a.m. on the first day at a café near the departure marina. We’ll get to know each other, go over what to expect during the Academy, and plan the week’s grocery shopping. Shopping usually takes around three hours.

By the time we return, the yacht is usually ready for us. If it isn’t, please be patient: Saturdays at the marina can be busy. Once we’ve stowed the provisions and settled into our cabins, we’ll begin the Academy with a safety briefing.

Practising marina manoeuvres
Join The Crew
Practising marina manoeuvres

Today we practise coming alongside, reversing into a berth, and securing the yacht. The marina gives us a chance to repeat each manoeuvre and build confidence at the helm. Once the yacht is safely moored, we’ll take a relaxed walk through Supetar. Then it’s time for dinner. Who’s up for some Balkan food?

Anchoring with a line ashore

Anchoring with a line ashore

Secluded bays are some of our favourite stops during the Skipper Academy. Against a beautiful backdrop, we’ll practise anchoring with a line ashore and get a feel for how much anchor chain to lay and how far to stay from shore. Afterwards, we’ll cook together and take a short walk to watch the sunset.

Skipper Skills in Action

Skipper Skills in Action

We’ll explore sailing topics together, from engine basics to weather, with guidance from instructors who use these skills at sea. We’ll also practise responding to emergencies, so you feel more confident when the unexpected happens.

Your final day
Join The Crew
Your final day

We’ll set off early, refuel, and return to the marina with time to put your new skills into practice. You’ll have the chance to demonstrate your boat handling and docking and departure manoeuvres.

The practical part wraps up in the early afternoon. We’ll then tidy the yacht and, if possible, pass any leftover food on to the next crew. After the instructors have discussed the week, each participant will have a one-to-one conversation and receive final feedback on whether they’re ready to become a JTC skipper.

JTC Seminar Day

JTC Seminar Day

We’ll leave the boat clean and tidy by 9:00 a.m., then meet at Hotel Vila Sika at around 9:30 a.m. for the final seminar. We’ll cover the practical and administrative details of working as a JTC skipper. A light lunch will be provided, and the seminar will finish at around 5:00 p.m.

If you’re flying home that evening, please book a flight departing no earlier than 7:00 p.m. Everyone else is invited to spend one final night at Marina Hostel Trogir, covered by JTC. We can go out for dinner together and raise a glass to completing the Academy.

Vis has it all

Vis has it all

Vis deserves a place on any sailing trip through Croatia. Its steep coastline hides secluded bays behind rocky headlands, with crystal-clear water made for snorkelling. Back on land, you can explore the island by jeep or scooter. In the evening, we’ll head to a party in an old fortress.

Rafting up

Rafting up

Have you ever anchored alongside several other yachts? As part of our flotilla of aspiring skippers, you’ll practise manoeuvres together and raft up so we can spend time as one big crew on the water. Coordinating a flotilla takes teamwork, and everyone gets a turn at the helm. Your instructors will share practical tips along the way.
