Thundering waterfalls, black sand beaches and blue glacier ice: It is not for nothing that Iceland is the location of several world-famous films, because unique natural spectacles come together here. We drive around the island in our rental car and experience the excitement of Iceland together on hikes in national parks, bathing in natural hot springs and road trip adventures in the remote Westfjords.
Road trip feeling between mountains and sea in the rugged Westfjords, taking a selfie behind a waterfall and going swimming in natural hot springs - the programme in Iceland is as diverse as its nature.
On our road trips, we change the pre-booked accommodation every 1 - 4 days and are otherwise super flexible on the road. Some activities are already booked for us, the majority of the day's activities are planned freely according to the group's mood. Our JTC-Guide knows the best spots, viewpoints and activities, which we can easily reach by rental car.

On the road trip we are on the road every day, usually between 2-3 hours. In return, we drive around the entire island in 12 days and don't miss any of the highlights. Sometimes we only make short stops, go for walks or short hikes. But in Iceland, the journey is the destination anyway. We will stay in cosy guesthouses or hostels, and a German-speaking JTC guide will be with us the whole time to show you the best spots and take care of the planning.

We meet at the airport and pick up our rental cars. Then we head to Reykjavik for shopping, as this will be the last big city we see for the next few days. After we have packed our cars, we leave the city to head for our first accommodation. Here we discuss the next few days and get to know each other over a leisurely dinner.
Driving time 1 hour to Selfoss

Today, two of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland are on the programme. Seljalandsfoss is famous for the fact that you can walk behind the waterfall. The perfect selfie spot! Not far away, Skogarfoss is waiting for us, a waterfall straight out of a picture book. Here, too, we can get very close to the waterfall and walk up a staircase on its side to marvel at it from above.
The next stop is a crashed US fighter plane, which we reach after a hike through a volcanic desert and which was already the star of a Justin Bieber music video.

Journey time 1.5-2 hours to Vik

To start the day, we visit the cliff Dyrholaey today, where, with a bit of luck, we can observe the cute puffins for the first time and have views of the unique black sand beaches of Iceland, which we also enter a short time later. Today's highlight is a visit to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where blue glacier ice drifts peacefully and metre-high icebergs lie on the black sandy beach.
Wanderung: ⏱️ 1 h | → 4 km | ↗ 140 Hm | ↘ 140 Hm
Travel time 3.5 hours to Höfn

After having done rather shorter hikes the last few days, today we have two somewhat longer hikes ahead of us. We visit the Vesturhorn, the southeasternmost tip of Iceland, and then hike to a small canyon, one of Iceland's hidden highlights. In between we relax in a hot pot (hot spring) situated directly by the sea.
Hike: Vesturhorn: ⏱️ 1,5 h | → 6 km | ↗ 0 Hm | ↘ 0 Hm Canyon: ⏱️ 3 h | → 10 km | ↗ 10 Hm | ↘ 10 Hm
Travel time 3.5 hours to Egilsstaðir

We spend the next two days in the north of Iceland. On the first day we visit one of the largest waterfalls in Europe, called Dettifoss, and hike in geothermal active area and marvel at the colourful steaming landscape.
Hike: ⏱️ 1,5 h | → 4 km | ↗ 60 Hm | ↘ 60 Hm
Travel time 3 hours to Husavik

Today is at leisure. There is the option of swimming in a lagoon or going on a whale watching tour. If you prefer to do some more hiking, you can do this at the large Lake Myvatn and then go swimming in a natural bathing lake with goldfish.

Today we cross the north to arrive at the foot of the Westfjords in the evening and eat Iceland's best salmon. On the way, we will stop again in Akureyri, where we can have a look at the town and replenish our supplies. Otherwise, there are a few photo stops at waterfalls and a rock gate. After the somewhat longer drive, we relax in the hot natural pool in the evening.
Travel time to Búðardalur 4.5 hours (480 km)

Today the adventurous part of our road trip starts: we drive into the remote Westfjords. Even though the way is the goal here, at the end of the day we are in Ísafjörður, the only real town in the Westfjords. Here we visit a cliff from which, in good weather, you can supposedly see all the way to Greenland. In the evening, a visit to an Icelandic brewery is on the agenda, and we see what else is possible in the far north with endless daylight.
Travel time to Ísafjörður approx. 3.5 h (300 km)

Those who wish can spend the morning riding Icelandic ponies or canoeing in the fjord. Afterwards, we will cross the Westfjords together. The highlight here is the Westfjords itself, because around every bend a new fjord with spectacular views awaits us, far away from civilisation. We can go on short hikes, visit small fishing villages and enjoy a real road trip feeling.
Driving time to Látrabjarg 2 hours (140 km)

We hike along a large cliff at the westernmost corner of Iceland, where we have a great chance to see the cute puffins. We then drive to a secluded red sand beach where, weather permitting, we make a campfire and enjoy endless nights in the far north.
Hike: ⏱️ 2,5 h | → 6 km | ↗ 100 Hm | ↘ 100 Hm

Today we return to Reykjavik. For this we take a ferry that brings us out of the Westfjords. At lunchtime we have the opportunity to try Iceland's national dish - fermented shark. A short detour takes us to Kirkjufell, the most famous mountain in Iceland, and not just since Game of Thrones. Once we arrive in Reykjavik, we can end the day together in the city and look back on our tour of the island.
Travel time to Reykjavik 4.5 hours including ferry (300 km)

For the last time today we drive with our rental cars, but only a short distance to the airport, where it is time to say goodbye and fly back home with many new impressions. We drop off our cars at 10 am, and those who wish can spend the day in Reykjavik on their own or even stay longer.
